DKS Collective

The Decolonizing Korean Studies Collective (DKSC) is a community of scholars, activists, and community organizers united by a shared commitment to challenging the colonial, racialized, and heteronormative foundations of Korean studies. As a field largely institutionalized within US academia during the Cold War, Korean studies has long operated as a knowledge project that served the strategic and ideological interests of the US empire. The production of academic knowledge about Korea was never neutral; it was embedded in a larger apparatus of military, political, economic, and cultural domination that continues to shape the field’s practices.

DKSC 는 한국학의 식민주의적, 인종주의적, 이성애규범적 토대에 문제제기하기 위해 연대하는 연구자 및 활동가들의 공동체입니다. 한국학은 냉전 시기 미국 학계 내에서 제도화된 분야로, 오랫동안 제국으로서의 미국의 전략적, 이데올로기적 이익에 복무하는 지식 프로젝트였습니다. 한국에 대한 학문적 지식은 결코 중립적이지 않았으며, 군사적‧정치적‧경제적‧문화적 지배라는 더 큰 구조 속에서 오늘날까지도 지속적인 영향을 미치고 있습니다.

We come together to address the harms perpetuated by this legacy, including the ongoing marginalization of voices from Korean, diasporic, and other communities silenced by colonial, racialized, and heteronormative structures of power. We stand in solidarity with those who have experienced violence, erasure, or exploitation within the academy and beyond—particularly early-career scholars made vulnerable by institutionalized white supremacy, settler colonialism, and academic gatekeeping—while also recognizing the complicity of Korean and Korean American scholars who uphold or benefit from these systems. 

우리는 이러한 유산으로 인해 지속되어 온 폐해에 대응하기 위해 함께 모였습니다. 이는 식민주의적, 인종주의적, 이성애규범적 권력 구조에 의해 지속적인 침묵과 배제를 경험한 한국(계), 디아스포라, 그리고 다른 여러 커뮤니티들의 주변화된 목소리를 포함합니다. 우리는 학계 안팎에서 구조화된 폭력, 비가시화, 착취를 경험한 이들, 특히 제도화된 백인 우월주의, 정착민 식민주의, 학문적 게이트키핑으로 인해 취약한 위치에 놓인 신진 연구자들과 연대함과 동시에 이러한 구조를 재생산하거나 이로 인해 혜택을 누리는 한국 및 한국계 연구자들의 공모에도 문제를 제기합니다.

We seek to change how Korean studies is practiced: what we study, how we study, and for whom. For us, decolonizing Korean studies is not a metaphor. It is a deliberate and ongoing process that demands structural change, collective care, and new imagination. This involves challenging institutional norms, confronting exploitative research practices, and promoting collaborative scholarship and pedagogy. We are deeply committed to the ethos of community building—an ideal too often appropriated or overlooked within academia’s hierarchical systems. We strive to cultivate a space rooted in radical trust where our shared knowledge and responsibility foster growth and repair.

우리는 무엇을, 어떻게, 또 누구를 위해 연구할 것인가라는 질문과 함께 한국학의 실천 방식을 변화시키고자 합니다. 우리에게 한국학의 탈식민화는 단순한 은유가 아닙니다. 그것은 구조적 변화, 집단적 돌봄, 급진적 상상력을 요구하는 의식적이고 지속적인 실천입니다. 이를 위해 우리는 제도적 규범에 도전하고, 착취적인 연구 관행을 비판하며, 협력적인 연구 및 교육 방식을 지향합니다. 학계 내 위계적 제도 하에서 손쉽게 간과되거나 전유되곤 하는 공간으로서의 ‘공동체’가 아닌, 급진적 신뢰를 바탕으로 공유된 지식과 책임을 통해 성장할 수 있는 공동체를 만들고자 합니다.

Since our formation in 2023, we have actively organized public events, roundtable workshops, and mentorship programs to foster dialogue, support early-career scholars, and create spaces for solidarity across disciplines and communities. We are dedicated to deepening this work as we envision Korean studies grounded in justice, equity, and collective liberation.

2023년 결성 이후, DKSC 는 비판적이고 시의적인 대화를 나누고, 신진 연구자들을 지원하며, 학제와 커뮤니티를 가로지르는 연대를 구축하기 위한 다양한 행사, 라운드테이블, 멘토링 프로그램 등을 조직해 왔습니다. 우리는 앞으로도 정의, 평등에 기반하여 집단적 해방에 기여하는 한국학을 함께 상상하고 실천하기 위한 노력을 지속적으로 해나갈 것입니다.
