DKSC Reads aims to engage with works that either align with or reinvigorate the critical awareness of decolonizing Korean studies. The first piece we will read together is “Queer Theory Impossible” (“불가능한 퀴어 이론”) by sociologist and queer scholar Minwoo Jung. In this essay, Jung critiques how “Korean queer studies” becomes commodified in ways that reinforce colonial research practices and hegemonic whiteness, particularly at the intersection of US-centric queer theory and Korean studies, using the Queer Korea controversy as a case study. Through this collective reading, we hope to reflect on the colonial realities of Korean studies and explore visions for decolonial practices within the context of US-centric, English-speaking academia.
